Olympic slopestyle competitions for the first time in history at the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park

The competitions were held on 8, 9, 11 and 13 February 2014.

On 8 and 9 February for the first time in history of the Olympic Winter Games men’s snowboard slopestyle competitions were held on the slopes of the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park. Among men Sage Kotsenburg (USA) became the gold medalist, the silver medal went to the Norwegian Staale Sandbech, the bronze went to the Canadian Mark McMorris. In this discipline Russia was presented by Alexey Sobolev, who wasn’t qualified to the final.

Among women the best in snowboard slopestyle became: gold medalist Jamie Anderson (USA), silver medalist Enni Rukajärvi (Finland), bronze medalist Jenny Jones (UK). Jenny said: «I did the best run I could have done… You feel that the whole world is watching you, and you need to control yourself, and don’t let it influence your performance».

On the 11th of February Dara Howell won the first Olympic gold medal in women's freestyle skiing slopestyle posted a score of 94.20 points on her first run. Devin Logan (USA) claimed silver with a score of 85.40 points, Canadian Kim Lamarre took bronze just 0.40 points behind.

On the 13th of February one more set of medals was awarded in skiing slopestyle. Americans became the best freestyle skiers: Joss Christensen (95.80 points) — Gold, Gus Kenworthy (93.60 points), Nicholas Goepper (92.40 points) — bronze.

Slopestyle is a type of extreme sporting competition that gained popularity at winter X-Games, and made its Olympic debut in Sochi. On a slope featuring rails and jumps athletes perform freestyle tricks showing the maximum control of the speed and direction. The slopestyle course has three rail-feature sections for jibbing (to choose) including the already famous “giant matryoshka doll”, and three jumps (athlete chooses one jump of two in each section). Thus, the course is very diverse, and every run can be unique due to a great variety of jib features and jumps.
