Russia tops the Olympics medal standings

The XXII Olympic Winter Games ended with a convincing victory of the Russian national team — 13 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze medals! It is the best result of the national team for the whole history of its performances at the Winter Olympics.

5 medals of the total count — two gold, one silver and two bronze medals — Russian athletes won on the Rosa Khutor courses. Many of these awards are first-ever for Russian athletes. Freestyler Alexander Smyshlyaev opened the medal count on the slopes of the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park by winning the bronze medal in mogul events on February 11, the first-ever Olympic medal for Russia’s mogul over the last 20 years. A week later Nikolay Olyunin won the silver medal in snowboard cross, winning the first-ever Olympic medal in the history of Russian men's snowboard cross. Nikolay passed the baton to the married couple of snowboarders Vic Wild and Alena Zavarzina. On February 19 for the first time in history of Russian sport, husband and wife brought the gold and bronze Olympic medals in the parallel giant slalom to the medal box of the national team, simultaneously. And already at the end of the Olympics, on the eve of the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games, Vic Wild became the two-time Olympic champion at Sochi 2014, winning in parallel slalom.
